The sins of a person who chants the name of these Jyotirlingas every morning till seven days are destroyed. For the fulfillment of the wish that a man recites these names every day, that fruit is soon attained. One can get rid of all sins by the mere sight of these sexes, this is the specialty of Lord Shiva.
सौराष्ट्रे सोमनाथं च श्रीशैले मल्लिकार्जुनम्।
परल्यां वैद्यनाथं च डाकिन्यां भीमशंकरम्।
सेतुबन्धे तु रामेशं नागेशं दारुकावने॥
वाराणस्यां तु विश्वेशं त्र्यम्बकं गौतमीतटे।
हिमालये तु केदारं घुश्मेशं च शिवालये॥
एतानि ज्योतिर्लिंगानि सायं प्रातः पठेन्नरः।
सप्तजन्मकृतं पापं स्मरणेन विनश्यति॥
एतेशां दर्शनादेव पातकं नैव तिष्ठति।
कर्मक्षयो भवेत्तस्य यस्य तुष्टो महेश्वराः॥
1.) Somnath Jyotirlinga: Gujarat
The first Jyotirlinga Somnath temple sits in Prabhas under the Kathiawar region of Gujarat (Saurashtra) province. In the same area, Lord Srikrishna Chandra finished his male leela after killing the Yadu dynasty. The hunter (hunter) named ‘Jara’ had pierced his feet (legs) with his arrows.
2.) Mallikarjun Jyotirlinga: Andhra Pradesh
Srimallikarjuna sits on Mount Srisail on the banks of Krishna River in Krishna district of Andhra Pradesh. It is called Kailash of the South. According to Mahabharata, worshiping Lord Shiva on Mount Srisail gives the fruits of performing Ashwamedha Yagya. Just by having a vision of the peak of Srisailam, all kinds of sufferings of people are removed, eternal happiness is attained.
3.) Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga: Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh
The third Jyotirlinga is famous as Mahakal or ‘Mahakaleshwar’. This place is in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, which is also known as Avantika Puri in ancient literature. There is a grand Jyotirlinga of Lord Mahakaleshwar.
4.) Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga: Northern India
Along with Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga, there is also Mamaleshwar Jyotirlinga. Both these Shivalingas have been counted in the same Jyotirlinga. Omkareshwar place also falls in the Malwa region.
5.) Kedarnath Jyotirlinga: Uttarakhand
This Jyotirlinga is of Shri ‘Kedarnath’ sitting on the top of the Himalayas. Shri Kedarnath is also known as ‘Kedareshwar’, who sits on a summit called Kedar. To the east of this peak is the temple of Lord Shri Badri Vishal on the banks of the Alaknanda River. If a person travels to Badrinath region without seeing Lord Kedarnath, then his journey becomes fruitless, meaningless.
6.) Bhimshankar Jyotirlinga: Dakini, Maharashtra
The name of this Jyotirlinga is ‘Bhimshankar’, which is located on Dakini. The place is located east of Mumbai in Maharashtra and north from Poona, on the Sahyadri mountain on the banks of the Bhima River. Bhima river also originates from this mountain. Shri Bhimshankar is the sixth place of Jyotirlinga in the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shankar who appeared in India.
7.) Vishwanath Jyotirlinga: Kashi, Uttar Pradesh
Seventh Jyotirlinga ‘Vishwanath’, enshrined in Kashi, is called the seventh Jyotirlinga. It is said that Kashi is the new city in the three worlds, which sits on the trident of Lord Shiva. Vishveshwar Jyotirlinga is located in Kashi city of Varanasi district of Uttar Pradesh. It is known by many names like Anandavan, Anandakanan, Avimukta Kshetra and Kashi etc.
8.) Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga: Nashik, Maharashtra
Ashtam Jyotirlinga is also known as ‘Trimbak’. It is about eighteen miles from Panchavati in Nashik district. The temple is located on the banks of the Godavari river near Brahmagiri. It is also called Trimbak Jyotirlinga, Trimbakeshwar Shiva Temple. Here Godavari River originates from a mountain called Brahmagiri. Just as the holy river Ganga flowing in North India has special spiritual significance, similarly the holy river Godavari flowing in the south has special significance.
9.) Vaidyanath Jyotirlinga: Jharkhand
The ninth Jyotirlinga is ‘Vaidyanath’. This place is near Jasidih railway station in Santhal Pargana of Jharkhand province. This place has been called Chitabhoomi in the Puranas. The place where the temple of Lord Shri Vaidyanath Jyotirlinga is located is called ‘Vaidyanathdham’.
10.) Nageshwar Jyotirlinga: Baroda, Gujarat
Jyotirlinga called Nagesh which is near Gomti Dwarka in Baroda region of Gujarat. This place is also called Darukavan. Some people consider the Nageshwar Jyotirlinga of Shivling located in Aundha village of South Hyderabad, while some people call Jageshwar Shivling located in Almora district of Uttarakhand. Nageshwar Jyotirlinga is located at a distance of about 25 km from Dwarkapuri in Gujarat province.
11.) Rameshwar Jyotirlinga: Tamil Nadu
The tenth Jyotirlinga is ‘Rameshwar’. Rameshwaratirtha is called the Setubandha Tirtha. This place is located in Ramanatham district of Tamil Nadu. Here the huge temple of Lord Rameswaram is adorned by the sea. It is one of the four dhams of Hindus. It is located in Ramanathapuram district in the state of Tamil Nadu. The island situated in the Gulf of Mannar has a huge famous temple of Lord Rama.
12.) Ghrishneshwar Jyotirlinga: Maharashtra
The Ekadashawan Jyotirlinga is ‘Ghushneshwar’. The place is near the village of Beerulath, about eighteen kilometers from Daulatabad, under the Maharashtra region. This place is also called ‘Shivalaya’. People are also called Ghushmeshwar and Ghushneshwar. About eight kilometers south of Ghrishneshwar, the fort of Daulatabad is situated on the top of a mountain.
